The 'Vacuum Brake Actuator' is the main component of a vacuum brake system. It converts the vacuum pressure in the train pipe into a mechanical force that is used to apply the brakes on the train. There are two types of brake actuation kit in the PNP Range, our standard kit and kit with trunnion mounting.
The Brake actuator comes in kit form and is easy to assemble without requiring any machining. The only difference between the kits is how the actuators can be mounted. The standard kit features a stud extending from the rear cover, while the trunnion version has two bearings mounted at its midpoint, making it the ideal option for situations where space is limited.
The PNP Railways brake actuator benefits from an internal non-return valve, a moulded diaphragm specifically designed with corrugations which allows movement without excessive loss of power. Each component is either moulded in a specific polymer, made of stainless steel (in case of the piston rod). Both O-rings have been selected for their suitability, one in the non-return valve and one in the gland seal, which runs in a polished bore.
These actuators are designed to be powerful and reliable, even when operating at the vacuum levels typically used on miniature railways.
